What Is a Stinger Transition (and Do You Need One)?
The animated wipe between scenes. Here's how to set one up in OBS, and when it helps versus when it's just noise.
A stinger is a short animation that covers the screen while you switch scenes — so instead of a hard cut from gameplay to BRB, a wipe or shape sweeps across and hides the change.
How to add one in OBS
Go to Scene Transitions → + → Stinger, pick your video file, then set the Transition Point in milliseconds — the moment the screen is fully covered, which is when OBS swaps scenes. Getting that number right is what makes it look seamless.
Finding the transition point
Play the file and note the timestamp where it fully covers the frame. For a one-second stinger that's usually around 500ms. If you see the scene change through the animation, your point is too early.
Do you actually need one?
If you switch scenes often — starting, gameplay, chatting, BRB — a stinger makes the channel feel produced. If you set one scene and stay there all stream, it's decoration you'll rarely see.
Keep it short and on-theme
Half a second to a second is plenty. Long, loud stingers get old fast for regulars. A cozy channel wants a soft wipe in its own palette, not a flashbang — several packs in the shop include a matching stinger.
