VTuber Overlay Setup: Framing a Model Without Covering It
VTuber layouts have one rule most packs get wrong. Here's how to build a scene around a model.
The rule: your model needs negative space around it, especially above the head and below the chest. Frames designed for a webcam crop tightly, which chops off ears, horns, hats and hand gestures the moment you move.
Use a scene, not a box
VTuber setups look best with an open environment behind the model โ a room, a forest, a window โ rather than a hard-edged frame around it. The model then reads as being somewhere, not pasted on.
Anchor the model to the floor
If your scene has a desk, rug or windowsill, line the bottom of your model up with it. That single alignment is what makes an avatar look like it's in the room.
Keep motion away from the face
Animate the edges โ drifting petals, rain on a window, a candle. Motion near the face competes with your expressions.
Chroma key cleanly
If your tracking app outputs a colored background, use a green that doesn't appear in your model, and set the OBS Chroma Key filter's similarity low enough that hair edges stay soft.
Scenes built for models
Open cozy environments with room to move โ ideal for VTuber and PNGTuber setups.
