Streaming With a Slow Internet Connection: What Actually Works
You don't need fibre to stream. Here's how to get a stable stream out of a modest upload.
You can stream watchably on about 3–4 Mbps upload. The trick is choosing settings that fit inside it rather than fighting for 1080p60 you can't sustain — a stable 720p30 looks far better than a stuttering 1080p.
Drop framerate before resolution for slow games
For chatting, card games and cozy sims, 30fps is fine and halves your data need. Save 60fps for fast action where motion matters.
Leave headroom
Never set bitrate to your full upload. Aim for roughly two-thirds so audio, overhead and other devices on the network have room. The bitrate calculator gives you the safe number.
Get off Wi-Fi and off the shared line
An ethernet cable fixes most instability. Also pause cloud backups and big downloads, and ask housemates not to start a 4K stream while you're live.
