What PC Do You Actually Need to Stream?
Honest minimum specs, what matters most, and how to stream well on hardware you already own.
For 720p–1080p streaming you want a 6-core CPU, 16GB RAM and a GPU with a hardware encoder (Nvidia GTX 1650 or newer, most modern AMD cards, or Apple Silicon). Below that you can still stream — you just drop resolution or framerate.
The encoder matters more than raw power
Hardware encoders (NVENC, AMF, Apple VT) do the heavy lifting off your CPU. A modest PC with NVENC out-streams a stronger one using x264 software encoding.
RAM is the common bottleneck
8GB is genuinely tight with a game, OBS and a browser open. 16GB is the practical floor; it's also the cheapest meaningful upgrade.
Laptops can do it
A gaming laptop streams fine — just keep it plugged in (battery mode throttles hard) and elevated so it can breathe. Thermal throttling looks exactly like a performance problem.
Cheaper wins first
Before upgrading, cap your game's framerate, close Chrome, use a hardware encoder, and check your bitrate fits your upload with the bitrate calculator. Those four fix most 'my PC can't stream' cases.
