Should You Make Your Own Overlay or Buy One?
An honest cost comparison in hours and money, and who should do which.
If you already design and animate, make it โ nothing matches a look you built yourself. If you don't, buying is almost always the better trade, and it's not close once you count the hours.
What making one really takes
A complete set is four screens, four alerts, a frame, panels and a transition. Even for someone competent in After Effects that's a weekend. For a beginner it's weeks of learning tools you may never use again.
What buying costs
Complete cozy packs typically run a few dollars to twenty-odd. Against a weekend of your time, the math is rarely close.
The real risk of DIY
Not ugliness โ inconsistency. Homemade sets tend to have a great Starting Soon screen and mismatched everything else, and mismatch is exactly what reads as 'new channel'.
The middle path
Buy a cohesive pack, then personalise it โ your name, your colors in the panels, your own emotes. You get consistency plus identity. And if you want something truly one-off, a custom commission is the upgrade path.
