How to Stream Console Games (PS5, Xbox, Switch)
Direct from the console or through a capture card — the trade-offs and the setup.
Two routes: stream directly from the console (free, but no overlays or scenes), or through a capture card into OBS (full control, costs money). Overlays require the capture card route.
Direct streaming
PS5 and Xbox stream to Twitch natively. It's easy and free, but you get the console's fixed layout — no custom overlay, alerts, or scenes.
Capture card setup
Console HDMI out → capture card → PC via USB. In OBS, add a Video Capture Device source and select the card. Then build scenes exactly as you would for PC games.
Watch for HDCP
PlayStation blocks capture of copy-protected content; disable HDCP in the PS5 system settings or your capture will be a black screen.
Deal with the delay
Capture through a card adds latency, so play from the console's direct output to your TV/monitor and use OBS only for the stream — don't play off the OBS preview.
Now you can use overlays
With the console in OBS, your pack layers on exactly like a PC game.
Console streams, cozy look
Once you're in OBS, every pack drops straight on top of your capture.
