Emotes get used when they say something chat wants to say. Design for the message first — a reaction, a mood, an inside joke — and the art second.
Cover the four reactions
Every chat needs love, laugh, shock and sad. If your set covers those four, it'll get used every stream regardless of what you play.
One idea per emote
At 28 pixels there's room for one clear expression. Complex scenes read as a blob — check yours in the free previewer before uploading.
Make it about your channel
An emote of your mascot, your catchphrase, or a running joke is one nobody else has. Generic smileys compete with global emotes and lose.
Match your overlay's style
Emotes drawn in the same palette and line style as your overlay make the whole channel feel designed. Packs with matching emotes are in the shop.
