How to Commission a Custom Stream Overlay (What to Send the Designer)
Good commissions come from good briefs. Here's exactly what to include so you get what you pictured.
Most disappointing commissions trace back to a vague brief. A designer can't read your mind — but give them these six things and you'll usually get something close on the first pass.
1. Your channel, in two lines
What you stream, who watches, and the feeling you want. 'Cozy late-night Stardew for a small chatty community' tells a designer more than a list of adjectives.
2. Reference images
Three to five examples of what you like — and one of what you don't. The negative example is often the most useful thing in the brief.
3. An exact asset list
Screens, alerts, panels, webcam frame, emotes, badges, transition — say which you need. Scope creep mid-project is where commissions go wrong.
4. Palette and platform
Two or three colors, plus whether you need 16:9, vertical 9:16, or both.
5. Deadline and revisions
Agree the timeline and how many rounds of changes are included, in writing, before work starts.
