Pick something simple
It has to work at 28 pixels. A cat, a frog, a ghost, a mushroom. Detailed original characters look great on a banner and turn to mush as an emote.
Make it expressive
You'll need it happy, sad, shocked and laughing. Choose something whose face can carry emotion clearly at small size.
Tie it to your aesthetic
A raven suits witchy; a cat in a jar suits kawaii; an otter suits cozy. The mascot should look like it lives in your overlay's world.
