How Much Do Small Streamers Actually Make?

Honest numbers for affiliate-level channels, where the money really comes from, and what to build first.

A Twitch affiliate keeps roughly half of a $4.99 sub โ€” about $2.50 โ€” and $0.01 per bit. So ten subs is around $25 a month. At affiliate level, streaming income is coffee money, and treating it as anything else leads to burnout.

Where small-channel money actually comes from

For most sub-100-viewer channels it's tips and one-off support, not subs. A visible, low-friction donation panel usually out-earns the sub button early on.

The payout threshold

Twitch pays out at $50 minimum. Small channels often sit below that for months, so plan around it rather than being surprised.

Diversify early

Channels that make real money usually sell something of their own โ€” art, commissions, merch, a Ko-fi. It doesn't have to be big, but it shouldn't all depend on one platform's split.

Spend carefully at the start

Before an expensive camera, fix audio and your channel's look โ€” those affect whether people stay. A complete overlay set costs less than a mic and changes first impressions immediately: browse packs or start with the free pack.
